What is Vasant Panchami?
Vasant Panchami welcomes the coming of spring (vasant) and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music, art and learning. It falls on the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Magha. Yellow, the colour of mustard fields in bloom, is associated with the day, and many people wear yellow and prepare yellow sweets and saffron rice.
How Vasant Panchami is celebrated
- Saraswati Puja: books, pens and musical instruments are placed before the goddess; students and artists seek her blessings. In West Bengal, Odisha and Assam it is one of the most important days for students, with community pandals in schools and colleges.
- Vidya Arambh / Akshar Abhyasam: young children are introduced to writing their first letters.
- Yellow: clothes, flowers and food in yellow.
- Kite flying: in Punjab and parts of North India, Basant is celebrated with kites.
- Weddings and new beginnings: many consider the day auspicious for starting new work.
Simple Saraswati Puja steps
- Clean the puja area and place an image or idol of Saraswati on a yellow or white cloth.
- Offer white or yellow flowers, sandalwood, rice and yellow sweets.
- Keep books, notebooks and instruments near the deity; many families do not study or write until the next day.
- Recite a Saraswati vandana or mantra your family uses and perform aarti.
