Hindu Festival Calendar 2027: Festival Dates Month by Month

This calendar lists the major Hindu festivals and vrats from late October 2026 through December 2027, with the date, weekday and a one-line explanation of each. Use the month links to jump ahead, or open a festival guide for its rituals and significance.

Scope of these dates: Dates are for New Delhi, India (IST), taken from the Drik Panchang 2026 and 2027 Hindu calendars and cross-checked against a second published calendar. Because Hindu festivals follow the lunar tithi at local sunrise (or at a specific time of day), the same festival can fall a day earlier or later in another city, country or tradition. Last checked: 23 October 2026.

How Hindu festival dates are calculated

Most Hindu festivals are fixed by the lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian one, which is why their dates move every year. A few things decide the date you see:

    • Tithi (lunar day): each festival is tied to a tithi, such as the Amavasya (new moon) of Kartik for Diwali. A tithi does not line up neatly with a calendar day, so panchangs apply rules about which tithi is current at sunrise, at midday, in the evening (pradosh) or at midnight, depending on the festival.
    • Location: sunrise, sunset and moonrise times change with place, so the same rule can give different dates in India, the UK or North America.
    • Amanta and Purnimanta months: South and western India usually end the lunar month at the new moon (Amanta), while much of North India ends it at the full moon (Purnimanta). Festival dates are mostly the same, but month names around them differ, and a few vrats such as Vat Savitri are kept on different days.
    • Solar festivals: Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Onam, Vishu and other solar new years follow the sun’s entry into a zodiac sign, so they stay close to the same Gregorian date each year.
    • Adhik Maas: roughly every three years an extra lunar month is added to keep the lunar and solar years aligned, which pushes later festivals into a different Gregorian month.
    • Tradition: communities such as Smarta and Vaishnava followers, or ISKCON temples, sometimes observe the same festival (for example Janmashtami or Ekadashi) on different days.

If your family follows a particular temple, sampradaya or regional panchang, follow its date for rituals and fasting. For puja muhurat times, use a panchang set to your own city, as timings are location-specific.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does my local calendar show a different date?

Festival dates depend on when the relevant tithi is in force at your location and on the rule your tradition uses. A difference of one day between cities, countries or panchangs is common and does not mean either calendar is wrong.

Which dates does this calendar use?

New Delhi dates from Drik Panchang, which follows the conventions most widely used in North India. Where a festival is mainly regional or commonly kept on a different day elsewhere, the table says so.

    When is Diwali in 2027?

Lakshmi Puja (main Diwali) falls on Friday, 29 October 2027 for New Delhi, with Dhanteras on 27 October and Bhai Dooj on 31 October 2027. Our 5 days of Diwali guide explains each day.

How often is this calendar updated?

We review it whenever a reader reports a discrepancy and before each major festival season, and add the next year’s dates during the final quarter of the current year. See our editorial policy for how we check dates.
