- Vaisakhi (Punjab): harvest festival, and for Sikhs the anniversary of the founding of the Khalsa in 1699; gurdwara visits, nagar kirtans, bhangra and fairs.
- Vishu (Kerala): the Vishukkani, an auspicious arrangement of rice, fruit, gold, a mirror and golden konna flowers, is the first sight of the new year; elders give vishukkaineetam (money) to children.
- Puthandu (Tamil Nadu): the Tamil New Year, with kolams, a festive meal including mango pachadi, and temple visits.
- Pohela Boishakh (West Bengal, Tripura, Bangladesh): new account books (haal khata) for traders, processions and Bengali feasts.
- Bohag (Rongali) Bihu (Assam): the spring Bihu, with Bihu dance and songs over several days.
- Pana Sankranti (Odisha): the Odia New Year, with the cooling drink pana.
- Jur Sital (Mithila) and Bisu (Tulu Nadu) also fall around this date.
Why these festivals share a date
All of these new years follow the solar calendar, beginning when the Sun enters Mesha (Aries). That is why they stay close to 13–15 April every year, unlike lunar new years such as Gudi Padwa and Ugadi, which move with the moon.
