What is Nirjala Ekadashi?
Nirjala (“without water”) Ekadashi, on Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi, is considered the strictest of the 24 Ekadashi fasts: devotees traditionally take no food or water from sunrise on Ekadashi until parana the next day. It is also called Bhimseni Ekadashi after the story of Bhima, the Pandava with a famous appetite, who could not keep the year’s Ekadashis. The sage Vyasa advised him to keep this single waterless fast, which tradition holds brings the merit of all the Ekadashis of the year.
How it is observed
- A complete fast without food or water, from sunrise to the parana window the next day.
- Worship of Lord Vishnu with tulsi leaves, yellow flowers and lamps, and chanting “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”.
- Charity, especially of water, earthen pots (matka), fans, umbrellas and sherbet, as it falls in peak summer.
- Night vigil with bhajans for many devotees.
Health note
Going without water in June heat is risky. Children, older people, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should not attempt a waterless fast; many families keep a fruit-and-water fast instead. Consult a doctor if unsure.
