What is Hariyali Teej?
Hariyali (“green”) Teej is a monsoon festival celebrated mainly by women in Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab. It commemorates the reunion of Shiva and Parvati: tradition holds that Parvati performed penance over many lifetimes before Shiva accepted her as his wife. Married women pray for their husbands’ well-being and a happy married life, and unmarried women for a good husband.
How Hariyali Teej is celebrated
- Women dress in green clothes and bangles, apply mehndi and wear jewellery.
- Many keep a fast and worship Shiva and Parvati (Teej Mata) in the evening.
- Swings (jhula) are hung from trees and decorated with flowers; women sing Teej folk songs.
- Married women receive a sindhara from their parents’ home: clothes, bangles, mehndi and sweets such as ghevar.
- In Jaipur, the Teej procession of the goddess passes through the old city.
