What is Guru Purnima?
Guru Purnima, on the full moon of Ashadha, is a day to honour one’s teachers and spiritual guides. It is also called Vyasa Purnima because it is traditionally celebrated as the birth anniversary of Maharishi Veda Vyasa, credited with compiling the Vedas and composing the Mahabharata. Buddhists mark the same full moon as the day the Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, and Jains also observe it.
How Guru Purnima is observed
- Guru puja: disciples offer flowers, fruit, clothes and dakshina to their guru and seek blessings.
- Ashrams and mutts: special satsangs, discourses and pada puja (worship of the guru’s feet).
- Schools and music traditions: students honour teachers; in Indian classical music and dance, it is an important day for the guru–shishya tradition.
- Vyasa Puja: worship of Veda Vyasa, especially in Sannyasa traditions, where Chaturmas vows often begin around this time.
