What is Narasimha Jayanti?
Narasimha Jayanti marks the appearance of Lord Narasimha, the fourth avatar of Vishnu, half man and half lion. According to the Puranic account, the demon king Hiranyakashipu had a boon that he could be killed neither by man nor beast, neither indoors nor outdoors, neither by day nor by night. Narasimha emerged from a pillar at dusk and killed him on the threshold of his palace, on his lap, protecting the young devotee Prahlad. Because Narasimha appeared at twilight, the main puja is held in the evening.
How it is observed
- Fasting from sunrise, with the sankalp taken at midday.
- Evening puja of Narasimha and Lakshmi, often with panakam (jaggery water) and other cool offerings.
- Recitation of the Narasimha Kavacham and stories of Prahlad.
- Major celebrations at Narasimha temples such as Ahobilam and Simhachalam in Andhra Pradesh and Yadagirigutta in Telangana, and at ISKCON temples.
