Ghatasthapana muhurat note for 2027
In 2027 the inauspicious Vaidhriti Yoga is in force for most of 7 April (from about 7:26 AM IST). When Vaidhriti Yoga or Chitra Nakshatra overlaps Pratipada, panchangs commonly advise performing Ghatasthapana in the Abhijit muhurat around midday, which in New Delhi is about 11:58 AM to 12:48 PM. Some families perform it early in the morning instead. Follow your family priest or local panchang.
What is Chaitra Navratri?
Chaitra Navratri, also called Vasant (spring) Navratri, is the nine-night festival of Goddess Durga held in Chaitra, at the start of the Hindu lunar new year. It mirrors Sharad Navratri in autumn: devotees worship the nine forms of Durga (Navadurga), fast and keep a lamp (akhand jyoti) burning. It is especially important in North India and closes with Ram Navami, the birth of Lord Rama.
The nine forms of Durga
| Day | Goddess |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Shailaputri |
| Day 2 | Brahmacharini |
| Day 3 | Chandraghanta |
| Day 4 | Kushmanda |
| Day 5 | Skandamata |
| Day 6 | Katyayani |
| Day 7 | Kalaratri |
| Day 8 (Ashtami) | Mahagauri |
| Day 9 (Navami) | Siddhidatri |
Our guides to each form, written for Sharad Navratri, apply to Chaitra Navratri too: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5, Day 6, Day 7, Day 8 and Day 9.
How Chaitra Navratri is observed
- Ghatasthapana: a kalash is installed with barley sown in soil beside it on Day 1.
- Fasting: many fast for all nine days or the first and last days, eating fruit, milk, sabudana, kuttu and singhara flour, and rock salt.
- Durga Saptashati: recitation of the Devi Mahatmya.
- Kanya Puja: on Ashtami or Navami, young girls are worshipped as forms of the Goddess and fed puri, chana and halwa.
- Ram Navami: the ninth day celebrates Rama’s birth at midday.
