What is Gudi Padwa?

Gudi Padwa is the Marathi and Konkani New Year. Families raise a gudi outside the home: a bamboo staff topped with an upturned brass or copper pot, wrapped in a bright silk cloth and decorated with neem leaves, mango leaves, a garland of flowers and a string of sugar crystals (gathi). The gudi is seen as a flag of victory and prosperity; popular tradition links it to Rama’s return to Ayodhya and to the victories of the Shalivahana dynasty, after which the Shaka era is named.

What is Ugadi?

Ugadi (Yugadi, “the beginning of an age”) is the New Year in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The day begins with an oil bath, new clothes and mango-leaf torans at the door. The special dish, Ugadi pachadi (bevu-bella in Karnataka), combines six tastes — neem flowers (bitter), jaggery (sweet), raw mango (sour), tamarind, salt and chilli — as a reminder that the year ahead will bring every kind of experience. Families also listen to the Panchanga Shravanam, the reading of the new year’s almanac.
