What is Sharad Purnima?
Sharad Purnima is the full moon that follows Sharad Navratri and marks the end of the monsoon. It is traditionally regarded as the night when the moon is closest to full brightness with all sixteen kalas (phases), and its rays are believed to have nourishing qualities. In the Vaishnava tradition it is the night of Krishna’s Maha Raas with the gopis in Vrindavan.
Kheer under the moonlight
The best-known custom is to prepare rice kheer in the evening and leave it out in the moonlight for some hours, often covered with a fine cloth, before eating it as prasad the next morning or late at night.
Kojagara Lakshmi Puja
In West Bengal, Odisha and Assam, the night is Kojagara (“who is awake?”) Lakshmi Puja. According to tradition, Goddess Lakshmi visits homes on this night and blesses those who stay awake; families keep a vigil, draw alpana and worship Lakshmi with coconut water, flattened rice and sweets.
