What is Devshayani Ekadashi?
Devshayani (“the Lord sleeps”) Ekadashi, on Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi, marks the day Lord Vishnu is believed to enter yoga-nidra (cosmic sleep) on the serpent Shesha in the ocean of milk. He awakens four months later on Devutthana Ekadashi (10 November 2027). This four-month period is Chaturmas, during which many devotees take vows and weddings and other major ceremonies are traditionally avoided.
Pandharpur Wari
In Maharashtra, Ashadhi Ekadashi is the culmination of the Pandharpur Wari, a pilgrimage in which lakhs of Warkari devotees walk for about three weeks, carrying the palkhis (palanquins) of saints Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram to the Vitthal–Rukmini temple in Pandharpur.
How it is observed
- Fasting from sunrise, either nirjala or phalahar (fruit and milk).
- Worship of Vishnu with tulsi, yellow flowers and lamps, and reading the Vishnu Sahasranama.
- Taking Chaturmas vows, such as giving up certain foods, for four months.
- Breaking the fast the next morning in the parana window.
