What is Ekadashi?
Ekadashi is the eleventh lunar day (tithi) of each fortnight, so it occurs about twice a month. It is sacred to Lord Vishnu, and many Hindus fast on it, avoiding grains and beans, or fasting completely. Each Ekadashi has its own name and story, usually told in the Puranas as a conversation between Krishna and Yudhishthira.
Why some Ekadashis have two dates
When the Ekadashi tithi spans two sunrises, Smarta and Vaishnava traditions use different rules to choose the fasting day. Vaishnavas avoid an Ekadashi that is touched by Dashami at Arunodaya (about 96 minutes before sunrise) and fast on the next day. Follow the date of your family or temple.
Ekadashi fasting rules
- Avoid: rice and other grains, pulses and beans; many also avoid onion and garlic.
- Allowed in a phalahar fast: fruit, milk and dairy, nuts, potatoes, sweet potatoes, sabudana, kuttu, singhara and rajgira flour, and rock salt.
- Nirjala: some keep a waterless fast, especially on Nirjala Ekadashi.
- Parana: break the fast the next day during the parana window, after Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi) has ended and before Dwadashi ends.
Most important Ekadashis of 2027
- Nirjala Ekadashi (14 June): the strictest fast of the year.
- Devshayani Ekadashi (14 July): Vishnu’s yoga-nidra begins; start of Chaturmas.
- Devutthana Ekadashi (10 November): Vishnu awakens; end of Chaturmas.
- Mokshada Ekadashi (9 December): Gita Jayanti.
