What is Ganesh Chaturthi?
Ganesh Chaturthi (Vinayaka Chaturthi) celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom and new beginnings. It falls on the Chaturthi of the bright half of Bhadrapada. Because Ganesha is believed to have been born at midday, the main puja is performed in the Madhyahna period.
The festival is celebrated with the greatest scale in Maharashtra, where Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak promoted public (sarvajanik) Ganeshotsav in the 1890s as a way to bring communities together. It is also widely celebrated in Goa, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
Why you should not look at the moon
According to a popular story, the moon laughed at Ganesha, who cursed it; anyone who sees the moon on Chaturthi night is believed to face false accusations (mithya dosha). Devotees therefore avoid moon sighting during the periods listed above. If it is seen accidentally, the Syamantaka Mani story from the Bhagavata Purana is traditionally recited as a remedy.
How Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated
- Sthapana: a Ganesha idol is installed at home or in a pandal with prana pratishtha.
- Shodashopachara puja: 16-step worship, offering durva grass (21 blades), red flowers, modak and laddoos.
- Duration: the idol is kept for 1.5, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days depending on family tradition.
- Aarti: morning and evening aarti, including “Sukhkarta Dukhharta”.
- Visarjan: immersion of the idol in water, with “Ganpati Bappa Morya” chants.
Eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi
Choose idols of natural clay (shadu) instead of plaster of Paris, use natural colours, and immerse in an artificial tank or a bucket at home. Many cities provide artificial ponds for visarjan.
