What is Hartalika Teej?
Hartalika Teej, on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, is the most rigorous of the three monsoon Teej festivals. Its name comes from harat (abduction) and aalika (female friend): according to the traditional story, Parvati’s friends took her into the forest so that she would not be married to Vishnu against her wishes. There she made a Shivling of sand and worshipped Shiva with such devotion that he accepted her as his wife. It is observed in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra (as Hartalika), and Nepal (as Teej).
How Hartalika Teej is observed
- Many women keep a nirjala fast (without food or water) for about 24 hours, from sunrise until the next morning.
- Clay or sand images of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha are made and worshipped with bel leaves, flowers and suhaag items.
- The Hartalika vrat katha is read, and women keep a night vigil with bhajans.
- The fast is broken the next morning after puja; the clay images are immersed.
Health note
A 24-hour fast without water is demanding. Pregnant women, those who are unwell, diabetic or on medication should consult a doctor; many families allow a modified fast.
