What is Kajari Teej?
Kajari Teej is the second of the three monsoon Teej festivals, falling three days after Raksha Bandhan. It is celebrated mainly in Uttar Pradesh (especially the Mirzapur and Varanasi region), Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Married women fast for their husbands’ well-being and worship Goddess Parvati in the form of Neemadi Mata, and unmarried women pray for a good husband. The festival takes its name from kajari, the monsoon folk songs of the region.
How Kajari Teej is observed
- Women keep a day-long fast, often without water, and worship Neemadi Mata with a neem branch.
- In Rajasthan, sattu sweets made of gram, barley or wheat flour are prepared; hence the name Satudi Teej.
- In the evening women sight the moon, offer arghya and break the fast.
- Women sing kajari songs and swing on decorated jhulas.
