What is Varalakshmi Vratam?

Varalakshmi Vratam is a vrat in honour of Goddess Varalakshmi, the form of Lakshmi who grants boons (vara). It is kept mainly by married women in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu for the prosperity and well-being of their families. The vrat is described in a katha in which Lakshmi appeared in a dream to a devout woman named Charumati and instructed her to perform this worship.

How Varalakshmi Vratam is performed

  1. A kalash is filled with rice, coins, betel leaves and turmeric, topped with a coconut, and decorated with a face of the goddess, a saree and jewellery.
  2. Ganesha is worshipped first, followed by the Varalakshmi puja with flowers, kumkum and the chanting of Lakshmi Ashtottara.
  3. Women tie a yellow sacred thread (dora or kankanam) with nine knots on the right wrist.
  4. Offerings include payasam, sundal, kozhukattai and other sweets; women exchange tambulam (betel leaves, turmeric, kumkum and fruit).
  5. The vrat katha is read and an aarti performed.
