What is Nag Panchami?
Nag Panchami is the day of worship of serpent deities (nagas), observed on the fifth day of the bright half of Shravana during the monsoon. Snakes hold an important place in Hindu tradition: Shesha Naga supports Vishnu, Vasuki coils around Shiva’s neck and was used as the rope in the churning of the ocean, and Krishna subdued the serpent Kaliya in the Yamuna. Families pray to the nagas for protection from snakebite and for the well-being of their children.
How Nag Panchami is observed
- Images of nagas are drawn on walls or the doorway with turmeric, sandalwood or cow dung, or clay or silver naga images are worshipped.
- Milk, rice, flowers, turmeric and kumkum are offered; many visit naga temples and anthills (snake mounds).
- Some families avoid digging the earth, cutting and frying on this day.
- In parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, women fast and pray for their brothers.
A note on live snakes
Feeding milk to live snakes is harmful to them; snakes do not drink milk naturally, and captured snakes often suffer. Wildlife laws in India protect snakes. Offerings to images, temples and anthills keep the tradition without harming animals.
