What is Anant Chaturdashi?
Anant Chaturdashi, on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturdashi, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Ananta (“the endless”), often shown resting on the serpent Ananta Shesha. Devotees tie a sacred thread with 14 knots, the Anant sutra, on the arm (right for men, left for women), praying for protection and prosperity. The Mahabharata tradition tells that Krishna advised the Pandavas to keep this vrat during their exile to regain what they had lost.
Ganesh Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi
For families and pandals that keep Ganesha for the full ten days from Ganesh Chaturthi, this is the day of immersion. In Mumbai and Pune, large processions with dhol-tasha carry idols such as the Lalbaugcha Raja to the sea or lakes, often continuing through the night and into the next morning.
How it is observed
- Worship of Vishnu with the Anant sutra, flowers, fruit and a sweet offering; the Anant vrat katha is read.
- Fasting for the day, often eating only once.
- Ganesh uttarpuja and aarti before the idol is taken for visarjan.
- In Jain tradition, Anant Chaturdashi is also observed at the end of Paryushana by the Digambara community.
