What is Ganga Dussehra?

According to the Puranic account, King Bhagiratha performed long penance to bring the Ganga down from heaven to purify the ashes of his ancestors, the sons of King Sagara. Ganga descended on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami, and Lord Shiva caught her in his matted hair to soften her fall to earth. The day is therefore also called Gangavataran. “Dussehra” here refers to ten (dasha) sins that a bath in the Ganga is traditionally believed to wash away.

How Ganga Dussehra is observed

  • A holy dip in the Ganga or another sacred river, or bathing at home with a little Gangajal.
  • Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar and the ghats of Varanasi, with lamps floated on the river.
  • Charity in sets of ten, such as ten fruits, ten lamps or ten measures of grain, a common custom.
  • Recitation of the Ganga Stotram or Ganga Lahari.
