What is Holi?

Holi is the Hindu festival of colours, celebrated on the full moon of Phalguna at the end of winter. It celebrates the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring, and is known for its joyful, inclusive spirit: people smear each other with coloured powder (gulal), spray coloured water and share sweets.

The story of Prahlad and Holika

According to the Puranic account, the demon king Hiranyakashipu demanded to be worshipped, but his son Prahlad remained devoted to Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu’s sister Holika, believed to be immune to fire, sat in a bonfire with Prahlad on her lap. Holika was burned, while Prahlad survived unharmed. The bonfire of Holika Dahan recalls this story. Vishnu later appeared as Narasimha to end Hiranyakashipu’s tyranny.

In Braj (Mathura and Vrindavan), Holi is also associated with Krishna, who is said to have playfully coloured Radha and the gopis, which is why Braj celebrates Holi over many days.

How Holi is celebrated

  • Holika Dahan: a bonfire of wood and cow-dung cakes is lit after puja; people circle it, offering grains, coconut and new crops, and tie a raw cotton thread around it.
  • Rangwali Holi: the next morning, people play with gulal and coloured water, visit friends and family, and eat gujiya, malpua and thandai.
  • Braj Holi: Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon, Phoolon wali Holi (with flowers) in Vrindavan, and celebrations at Mathura’s temples, spread over the days before Holi.
  • Other regions: Basanta Utsav and Dol Jatra in West Bengal and Odisha, Shimga in coastal Maharashtra and Goa, and Hola Mohalla, a Sikh festival held the day after Holi.

Safe and eco-friendly Holi

  • Use natural or skin-safe colours; avoid colours with industrial dyes or metallic pigments.
  • Apply oil or moisturiser to skin and hair before playing.
  • Protect eyes, and never throw water balloons at faces or at animals.
  • Burn only dry wood and cow-dung cakes in the bonfire, not plastic or rubber.
